Heat Treating Services

Vacuum Hardening:
The Woodworth Group has three new state of the art 12-bar SECO vacuum furnaces. The 12-bar pressure quench affords us the assurance that dense heavy loads will be fully quenched. The convection heating system provides uniform heating, which enables us to better control distortion. These furnaces will handle up to 3500 pounds per furnace

Vacuum Carburize:
Parts that experience excessive distortion in conventional carburizing and quench furnaces would lend themselves to this process. Once parts are brought to heat in an inert atmosphere a carburizing agent is introduced and using a pulse or pressure carburizing method carburizes the parts. After this phase of the process, the temperature is brought to the diffusion temperature level and the parts are quenched in the chamber wherein a recirculating fan increases the quenching gas pressure to 12 atmospheres. The heated gas is cooled before the load of parts can be removed.

Ultrawear/ Ferritic-Nitrocarburize (FNC):

This process is applied to ferrous metal parts to provide wear (anti-galling) and some corrosion resistance. It also increases fatigue properties and is specifically designed to enhance wear for parts such as forging or stamping dies, as well as fixtures, gears, slides, molds etc. The process creates a metallurgical case structure that is composed of the following two layers: Compound Zone & Nitrogen Diffusion Zone

Ultrawear Plus:
This process gives you all the benefits of the Ultrawear process, but it increases the corrosion resistance by using our Ultracoat brand corrosion preventative, which has been formulated exclusively for The Woodworth Group. When used along with the Ultrawear process this Ultracoat provides a durable, self-healing corrosion resistant film to the nitro-carburized surface of the treated part. This Ultracoat does not create a surface barrier like traditional coatings, but penetrates deep into the micro porous nitride layer locking into the porosity without adding any significant growth to the treated part. Ultracoat in the porosity of the nitro-carburized case provides a durable corrosion resistant surface that is not only wear resistant, but is not subject to chipping or scratching.

Gas Nitriding:
This process is another way of altering the surface properties of a part for improving the resistant to surface indentation, fatigue and wear. It is achieved by using a low temperature process to control size change. This process will give parts a surface hardness up to 1100 HV and a case depth from 0.005 – 0.030 inches (0.1 – 0.6 mm). Gears, shafts and sprockets are just a few examples of parts that lend themselves to gas nitriding.

Carburizing:
This is another form of case hardening. Parts are heated in an atmosphere containing certain elements that will alter the composition, mirco-structure and properties of their surface. A hard high-carbon surface is produced, with typical hardness ranging from 55 to 65 HRC. Case depths range from less than 0.020 to 0.060 inches (less than 0.5 to 1.5 mm).
At Woodworth, we utilize hot oil quenching to better control distortion on parts. Our high volume continuous batch furnaces not only give us the flexibility to rack parts, which further aid in the control of distortion, but this equipment also enables us to provide a heat treat service with consistent quality at competitive prices.
