Push Performance Further With Ultrawear+™ in Flint, MI
Ultrawear+ is a multi-phase, engineered treatment designed for parts that require both high wear resistance and exceptional corrosion protection. Developed by Woodworth Heat Treating, this process combines ferritic nitrocarburizing (FNC) with a controlled oxidation phase and a proprietary Ultracoat® polymer dip. The result? Durable, high-performance components with an aesthetic black finish and superior protection.
Designed for carbon steels, alloy steels, and cast irons, Ultrawear+ improves fatigue life, increases tensile and yield strength, and greatly reduces the risk of distortion during processing.
What Makes Ultrawear+ Different?
Ultrawear+ uses a three-step process—FNC, oxidation, and polymer coating—to deliver a surface that resists wear, corrosion, and fatigue. This layered structure makes it ideal for parts operating in extreme or corrosive environments.
Triple-Layer Surface Engineering
Ultrawear+ forms a triple-layer surface designed for extreme performance. It includes a corrosion-resistant black oxide finish, a file-hard white layer for wear protection, and a deep diffusion zone that boosts strength and fatigue resistance.
Polymer-Infused Protection
Our Ultracoat polymer dip penetrates the surface porosity to form a self-healing, chip-resistant barrier. This final layer offers outstanding corrosion resistance that locks into the nitrided surface.
Engineered Flexibility
Furnace temperatures range from 1,000°F to 1,200°F, with cycle times tailored to each part’s material & required case depth. Controlled oxidation takes place at 850°F to 1050°F, & our polymer coating is available in multiple colors.
Flint’s FAQs about Ultrawear+
Curious whether Ultrawear+ is the right fit for your components? Here are some of the most common questions we hear from engineers and manufacturers looking to upgrade performance in harsh environments.
This proprietary treatment is ideal for wear-critical, corrosion-prone environments. Low carbon steel and cast iron parts are especially suited for the process, making it a game-changer for oil and gas, agriculture, automotive, and industrial machinery applications.
Typical components include:
- Gears, shafts, and pistons
- Valves and seats
- Fasteners and couplings
- Housings and brackets
No. Ultrawear+ is a sub-critical, low-temperature process that significantly reduces distortion compared to higher-temperature treatments. Your parts maintain their original dimensions and tolerances.
While both treatments improve wear resistance and material strength, Ultrawear+ takes it a step further by adding a controlled oxidation cycle and a polymer coating. This creates a multi-layered surface that not only resists wear and fatigue but also offers significantly better corrosion protection. It’s the ideal upgrade when your components are exposed to moisture, chemicals, or harsh outdoor environments.
